Joan S. (Metz) Doyle

June 15, 1925 ~ February 6, 2018 (age 92)

Joan S. Doyle (nee Metz), age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6th surrounded by family.  Dear mother of Lauren Hattenbach (husband Harry) and Keven Doyle (wife Julia); loving grandmother of Brendan Callaghan; sister of the late Susan Kane; aunt of Jim and Pat Doyle and Patrick and the late Michael Kane.  Joan was born in Madison, WI and for a few years, as a child, resided in Berlin, Germany.  She settled in Euclid, OH graduating from Shore High School and life guarding at Euclid Beach. Joan’s lifelong passions were airplanes and flying.  She attained her pilots’ license at the age of 16 and was a stewardess for United Airlines after college.  She married her former husband, Dr. John P Doyle, in Paris, France.  During the war, throughout the 1940’s and 50’s, the couple resided in Bremen, Germany, Naples, Italy, and Montreal Canada, finally settling down in the San Francisco Bay area to raise a family in  Menlo Park and Atherton, CA.  Joan became a school teacher at Ravenswood High School in Palo Alto, CA in the 60’s and in later years resided and worked as a social worker in Houston, TX and Cedar Rapids, IA before moving back to Cleveland in the late 70’s to care for her mother and attend Case Western Reserve School of Social Work where she attained her Master’s Degree in social work. A graduate of The University of Wisconsin, she also attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Joan worked at the Berea Children’s Home the last two decades of her career, working her way up to the position of Assistant Executive Director.  Joan had one more true passion in her life - Her Dogs!  Joan LOVED her dogs!  A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be announced at a later date.
